A simple example would be a sentence such as " Dejaron de fumar ," where a conjugated form of the verb dejar (here meaning "to give up" or "to quit") is followed by de and the infinitive fumar The most commonly used Modal Verbs in Spanish are: deber, necesitar, permitir, poder, querer, saber, soler and deber de, haber que, tener que. The verb that follows a modal verb is always in the infinitive form. In Spanish the preposition that goes before any given verb will always depend on the verb, the intention, etc. It does not depend on the fact that it is an infinitive by itself.
